For the week that ended on May 17th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Fifty Shades of Grey again took the top spot on the Blu-ray and overall package-media lists. This adaptation of E.L. James' bestselling erotic novel netted Universal a healthy profit despite unspectacular critical notices (a Metacritic score of
46%);
Fifty Shades of Grey grossed over $569 million worldwide on top of a $40-million budget. During its second week on all home media platforms, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 56%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was another holdover: the Weinstein Company's
Paddington. Director Paul King's adaptation of author Michael Bond's beloved literary character was a modest theatrical success last January. The film
earned $258 million worldwide on top of an estimated $55-million budget, and it also enjoyed a decent critical reception (its Metacritic score stands at
77%). On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Paddington sold 8% as many Blu-rays as
Fifty Shades of Grey and had an HD market share of 37%. On the overall package-media chart, however,
Paddington came in at third under Universal's
Pitch Perfect.
Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Blackhat rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists. Director Michael Mann's stylish cyber-thriller - his first film since 2009's
Public Enemies - was a major critical and commercial flop for Universal this year.
Blackhat earned just over $17 million worldwide on top of its estimated $70-million budget, and it currently has a
51% score on Metacritic.
Blackhat sold 7% as many Blu-ray copies as
Fifty Shades of Grey and had a Blu-ray market share of 49%. On the overall package-media rankings, Mann's film debuted at sixth place behind
Mortdecai and
The Cobbler.
