Strand Releasing has acquired Peter Greenaway's (The Pillow Book) latest film, Eisenstein in Guanajuato (2015), starring Elmer Bäck, Luis Alberti, and Maya Zapata.
The film had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, where it was nominated for Golden Bear Award.
The film follows the legendary Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein as he travels to Guanajuato, Mexico to shoot the film Que Viva Mexico and falls in love with his male guide, Palomino Canedo.
Following the official announcement, Marcus Hu of Strand Releasing said: "(Greenaway) is a filmmaker that we've long admired and a filmmaker that fits our library."
Jean-Christophe Simon of Films Boutique, which is in charge with international sales of <>Eisenstein in Guanajuato, also commented: "Strand Releasing is the perfect company to bring this strong, innovative and provocative film to the audience in the US and to allow younger people to discover the work of Peter Greenaway as well".
Eisenstein in Guanajuato will have its North American premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival. Strand Releasing plans to have the film in U.S. theaters in late 2015/early 2016.
