Hobbit trilogy, director Peter Jackson's prequel to his Academy Award-winning
Lord of the Rings Trilogy has performed admirably at the box office; to date,
The Battle of the Five Armies has
grossed more than $955 million worldwide. Its solid small-screen debut also augers well for its future - the film had a Blu-ray market share of 54%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Into the Woods. Director Rob Marshall's blockbuster reimagining of
the Tony Award-winning stage musical,
Into the Woods was a modest holiday hit for the Mouse House following its Christmas Day-release. The film
grossed just under $128 million domestically on top of its projected $50-million budget, and it garnered a
Metacritic score of 69%. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Into the Woods sold 32% as many Blu-rays as
The Battle of the Five Armies and had an HD market share of 38%.
Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Unbroken rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. A contemporary dramatization of author Laura Hillenbrand's bestselling nonfiction novel, this WWII-era drama also proved a modest financial success. Despite some middling critical notices - its Metacritic score is
59% - the film grossed over
$161 million worldwide on top of an estimated $65-million production budget.
Unbroken sold 20% as many Blu-ray copies as
The Battle of the Five Armies and had a Blu-ray market share of 44%.
