According to a new report published by the British video Association (BVA), sales of video entertainment product totaled more £6,000,000 (approximately $8,900,000) per day in 2014. The sales levels match those of 2013.
Additionally, 24 million people purchased a disc to own -- 57% of all sales were impulsive, while 55% of all disc sales were for catalog titles.
Packaged media sales accounted for two-thirds of all video sales. Total retail sales generated more than £1.4 billion ($2.08 billion), with DVD and Blu-ray sales responsible for 89% of all spending.
After the data was released, Robert Price, Chair of the British Video Association, said "I can't think of a more exciting sector to be a part of. How many other categories reinvent and refresh themselves every single week – and with products that enjoy such high awareness and emotional engagement? How many can claim an unrivalled halo effect across multiple household brands and product lines, from confectionary and spirits, to clothing? The power of our category extends far beyond the entertainment aisle. It puts us in a unique position and one to feel incredibly proud of."
David Sidebottom, Senior Media Analyst at Futuresource Consulting, also commented on EST sales: "We are starting to see signs that the recent success of electronic sell through in the USA is being replicated in the UK, with over 30% growth in sales in 2014. This performance was driven by high profile new services, increased consumer awareness and a number of studio initiatives".
