Blu-ray Sales, March 16-22: Penguins Marches to the Top

For the week that ended on March 22nd, the DreamWorks' animated comedy Penguins of Madagascar took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. A spinoff from the popular Madagascar franchise, this Penguins feature struggled to take hold at the box-office; the film grossed only $83 million domestically on top of its estimated $132-million production budget, although its international totals of $285 million certainly helped to close that gap. This week, Penguins of Madagascar had a Blu-ray market share of 57%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Exodus: Gods and Kings. Director Ridley Scott's Biblical epic did not find the critical and commercial appreciation of Scott's Oscar-winning Gladiator. Exodus grossed just over $65 million domestically on top of its projected $140-million budget (that said, like Penguins it performed much better overseas, as evidenced through its $202-million international figures), and its critical notices are just as disappointing, considering its 52% Metacritic score. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Exodus sold 85% as many Blu-rays as Penguins of Madagascar and garnered an HD market share of 50%.

Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Annie rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. A contemporary retelling of the iconic comic-strip heroine, this new Annie proved a modest financial success. Despite some fairly scathing critical notices - its Metacritic score is 33% - the film grossed over $134 million worldwide on top of an estimated $65-million production budget. Annie sold 50% as many Blu-ray copies as Penguins of Madagascar and had a Blu-ray market share of 40%.
