Blu-ray Sales, March 9-15: Mockingjay Continues to Lead Sales Revolution

For the week that ended on March 15th, Lionsgate's blockbuster adventure The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 continued to hold at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. The partial adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestselling YA novel was a massive box-office success, grossing over $751 million worldwide - with almost $335 million of that coming from domestic totals alone - on top of a $125-million production budget. This week, Mockingjay - Part 1 had a Blu-ray market share of 52%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. This family comedy broke the strong hot streak that the previous Night at the Museum films set. Secret of the Tomb grossed just under $113 million domestically on top of its projected $127-million budget, and its critical notices are even more disappointing, considering its 47% Metacritic score. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Secret of the Tomb sold 56% as many Blu-rays as Mockingjay - Part 1 and garnered an HD market share of 41%.

Finally, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Big Hero 6 rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. Inspired by the cult Marvel Comics property of the same name, the animated hit brought the Mouse House commercial and critical praise following its release in November of last year. In addition to its worldwide box-office gross of over $572 million (on top of an estimated $165-million production budget), the film was also this year's Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Feature. Big Hero 6 sold 30% as many Blu-ray copies as Mockingjay - Part 1 and had a Blu-ray market share of 43%.
