Blu-ray Sales, March 2-8: Mockingjay Fights Its Way to the Top

For the week that ended on March 8th, Lionsgate's blockbuster adventure The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 debuted at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. This partial adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestselling YA novel was a massive box-office success; the film grossed over $751 million worldwide - with almost $335 million of that coming from domestic totals alone - on top of a $125-million production budget. This week, Mockingjay - Part 1 had a Blu-ray market share of 53%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Big Hero 6. Inspired by the cult Marvel Comics property of the same name, the animated hit brought the Mouse House commercial and critical praise following its release in November of last year. In addition to its worldwide box-office gross of over $572 million (on top of an estimated $165-million production budget), the film was also this year's Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Feature. Big Hero 6 sold 39% as many Blu-ray copies as Mockingjay - Part 1 and had a Blu-ray market share of 46%.

Finally, another Disney title, the straight to home-media fantasy Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast, rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. The film bears out Disney's success with this DTV franchise, which also includes Tinker Bell, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, Secret of the Wings, and The Pirate Fairy. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast sold 24% as many Blu-rays as Mockingjay - Part 1 and garnered an HD market share of 43%.
