Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Enemy, Polytechnique) has agreed to direct a sequel to Ridley Scott's cult sci-fi thriller Blade Runner. The sequel will be produced by Alcon Entertainment, which acquired the rights to Blade Runner in 2011.
According to early reports, Harrison Ford will reprise his iconic role as Rick Deckard, while Scott will executive produce together with Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson from Alcon.
Hampton Fancher, who co-wrote the script for the original film, and Michael Green (Green Lantern) will be in charge with the script for the new film.
Shooting will begin in the summer of 2016.
Following the official announcement, Kosove and Johnson said: "We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on 'Prisoners. Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn't be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team."
