Blu-ray Sales, February 9-15: Dalmatians and Alexander Vie for Number One

For the week that ended on February 15th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's 101 Dalmatians was the top seller on the Blu-ray-only sales list. Like Dumbo, this animation classic has the distinction of being one of the pictures that saved the studio; its production costs were so low that, when coupled with the film's relative box-office success, helped Disney rise from the financial troubles caused by the costs accrued from 1959's Sleeping Beauty. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, 101 Dalmatians garnered a great HD market share of 100%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only chart was another Disney new release: the studio's star-studded adaptation of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. This family comedy was a sleeper hit for the Mouse House after its October premiere. Despite mediocre critical notices (its Metacritic score is 54%), the film grossed over $100 million worldwide on top of a modest $28-million budget. And its success continues on home media - on the Blu-ray-only ranking, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day sold 34% as many Blu-rays as 101 Dalmatians (and garnered an HD market share of 26%). Regarding overall package-media totals, the film actually came in first place, beating 101 Dalmatians, which sold 78% as many units as the animated favorite.

Finally, Lionsgate's John Wick rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings. A violent star vehicle for Keanu Reeves, John Wick was a modest success for Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment. The critical community gave it average notices - its Metacritic score is 67% - and audiences worldwide brought its box-office total to over $78 million, a figure that seems slight until one considers that the picture's estimated production budget was only $20 million. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, John Wick sold 31% as many Blu-rays as 101 Dalmatians (and garnered an HD market share of 45%). On the overall package-media chart, the film moved 54% as many units as Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
