Blu-ray Sales, February 3-8: Dracula Rises to Number One

For the week that ended on February 8th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Dracula Untold made its home-media debut at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. This horror-adventure - Universal's first attempt at kickstarting an Avengers-type franchise for its catalog of classic movie monsters - struggled both critically and commercially at the box office last year. The film received below-average critical notices (its Metacritic score is 40%) and went on to gross only $56 million domestically, a figure below its estimated $70-million production budget (that said, the picture performed much stronger overseas, earning an additional $159 million). Last week, Dracula Untold had a Blu-ray market share of 49%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only chart and overall package-media charts was another new release: the actioner John Wick. A violent star vehicle for The Matrix's Keanu Reeves, John Wick was a modest success for Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment. The critical community gave it average notices - its Metacritic score is 67% - and audiences worldwide brought its box-office total to over $78 million, a figure that seems slight until one considers that the picture's estimated production budget was only $20 million. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, John Wick sold 97% as many Blu-rays as Dracula Untold (and garnered a slightly higher HD market share of 50%). On the overall package-media chart, the film moved 95% as many units as the Universal Studios blockbuster.

Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Fury rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only chart. Like, John Wick, director David Ayer's intense WWII drama proved fitfully successful for its studio. The movie grossed over $211 million worldwide on top of a $68-million budget, and it mostly connected with critics, as evinced by its 64% Metacritic score. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Fury sold 40% as many Blu-rays as Dracula Untold (and garnered an HD market share of 48%). Regarding overall package-media totals, the film came in fifth place - it fell behind the Twentieth Century Fox releases The Best of Me and The Book of Life - and moved 41% as many units as Dracula Untold.
