For the week that ended on January 25th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's
Lucy made its home-media debut at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. This sci-fi action-thriller gave Luc Besson his first unqualified commercial success in North America - as a director (Besson is also the writer/producer of the
Taken) series - since 1997's
The Fifth Element. Despite receiving average critical notices (its Metacritic score is
61%),
Lucy grossed over
$126 million domestically on top of its relatively paltry $40-million budget and went on to earn another $332 million in international totals. Last week,
Lucy had a Blu-ray market share of 51%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only chart and overall package-media charts was another Universal title: the stop-motion-animated fable
The Boxtrolls. An adaptation of Alan Snow's YA novel
Here Be Monsters!, this Laika production had some trouble connecting with viewers after its September premiere. The critical community was not overwhelmingly in favor of the picture - its
Metacritic score is 61% - nor did audience lend
The Boxtrolls much in the way of commercial support, as its modest
$50-million domestic gross (on top of a $60-million budget) indicates. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
The Boxtrolls sold 40% as many Blu-rays as
Lucy (and garnered an HD market share of 49%). On the overall package-media chart, the film moved 41% as many units as the Scarlett Johansson-starring thriller.
Finally, Warner Home Entertainment's
Annabelle rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only chart. The first official spinoff from the 2013 horror smash
The Conjuring,
Annabelle courted that earlier film's commerciall success without ever approaching its critical acclaim. The movie grossed over
$255 million worldwide on top of a $6.5-million budget, but it left critics cold, as evinced by its
37% Metacritic score. On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Annabelle sold 28% as many Blu-rays as
Lucy (and garnered an HD market share of 43%). Regarding overall package-media totals, the film came in fourth place - it fell behind the David Fincher drama
Gone Girl - and moved 34% as many units as
Lucy.
