Blu-ray Sales, January 12-18: Gone Girl Returns to the Top

For the week that ended on January 18th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Gone Girl made its home-media debut at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. The big-screen adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestselling novel, Gone Girl made a strong impact on audiences when it premiered last October; in addition to garnering good critical notices (Gone Girl's Metacritic score is 79%), the film grossed over $367 million worldwide on top of a $61-million budget and received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Last week, Gone Girl had a Blu-ray market share of 38%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only chart was Universal Home Entertainment's detective drama A Walk Among the Tombstones. Another literary adaptation - this time of the Lawrence Block novel featuring his beloved P.I. Matthew Scudder - director Scott Frank's finished film had some trouble connecting with viewers after its September premiere. Despite much praise for star Liam Neeson, the critical community was not overwhelmingly in favor of the picture - its Metacritic score is 57% - nor did audience lend A Walk Among the Tombstones much in the way of commercial support, as its modest $26-million domestic gross indicates. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, A Walk Among the Tombstones sold 41% as many Blu-rays as Gone Girl (and garnered an HD market share of 41%). On the overall package-media chart, the film moved 38% as many units as the David Fincher thriller.

Finally, Marvel and Disney Home Entertainment's Guardians of the Galaxy rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only chart. This goofy sci-fi adventure was somewhat of a surprise hit for its distributors when it premiered in August. Despite taking its cues from a cult Marvel property, Guardians of the Galaxy proved both critically and commercially successful, netting a Metacritic score of 76% and grossing over $332 million domestically. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Guardians of the Galaxy sold 23% as many Blu-rays as Gone Girl (and garnered an HD market share of 51%). On the overall package-media chart, the film came in fourth place - it fell behind the Denzel Washington-starring actioner The Equalizer - and moved 17% as many units as Fox's dark thriller.
