Production of German director Roland Emmerich's sequel to his mega-blockbuster Independence Day will start in May 2015. Currently, Twentieth Century Fox plans to have the film in theaters across the nation on June 24, 2016.
According to Deadline, Will Smith will not reprise his role.
The first film, which was released in 1996, was based on a script by Dean Devlin and director Emmerich. In addition to Smith, its cast included Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Randy Quaid, Robert Loggia, Vivica A. Fox, and Adam Baldwin.
