Looks like I forgot to do this yesterday, so coming at you, albeit a little delayed, is a breakout of what came out on Blu-ray yesterday. This, of course, was a huge day for the format as we welcome Universal Studios to the family. Not surprising, the studio brought out their big guns with the release of '
The Mummy: Deluxe Edition' and '
The Mummy Returns: Deluxe Edition'.
After having watched these two films myself, I can agree with every review I have read so far, including by our very own
Martin Liebman, that these are absolutely wonderful high definition releases. The video is stunning, and the sound is something that must be heard. Universal spent some good money in order to ensure their releases would meet the expectations of Blu-ray owners, and in my opinion, it was well worth it.
Also released yesterday was the Sony Pictures film '
21' and Warner Brother's Blu-ray "make-up" release of '
The Perfect Storm'. Both titles are strong rentals (if you haven't seen them yet) as they more-or-less will appeal to certain Blu-ray fans, while at the same time completely ignoring others. Definitely put them in your Netflix que.
Next week is going to be a big one with something like 30 Blu-ray titles hitting the market at once. Paramount is releasing a ton of titles - including '
Beowulf' and various films from the Jack Ryan series - and a personal favorite of mine ('
Dark City') is getting high definition treatment.
