For the week that ended on October 19th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
X-Men: Days of Future Past took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. Director Bryan Singer's ambitious sci-fi blockbuster - it is simultaneously a prequel and sequel to the likes of
X-Men: The Last Stand,
The Wolverine, and
X-Men: First Class - was a big success when it premiered last May; after receiving positive critical acclaim (it has a
Metacritic score of 74%), the film
grossed over $746 million worldwide on top of its estimated $200-million budget. Last week,
Days of Future Past had a strong Blu-ray market share of 61%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Dreamworks'
Mr. Peabody & Sherman. This animated comedy struggled to make an impression with viewers following its March premiere. Critics were lukewarm on the film - it has a
Metacritic score of 59% - and audiences failed to make the film a success in the domestic market, where it grossed only
$111 million on top of its estimated $145-million budget (it did, however, make an additional $161 million overseas). On the Blu-ray-only ranking,
Mr. Peabody & Sherman sold 33% as many Blu-rays as
Days of Future Past (and garnered an HD market share of 48%). On the overall package-media chart, the film moved 42% as many units as the
X-Men feature.
Finally, Paramount Home Entertainment's
Transformers: Age of Extinction rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. The fourth film in director Michael Bay's
Transformers franchise,
Age of Extinction proved a massive hit with audiences this past summer. The film
grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of its projected $210 million budget, and these earnings came on the heels of less-than-enthusiastic critical notices; on Metacritic,
Age of Extinction mustered a
32% approval rating.
Age of Extinction sold 13% as many Blu-rays as
Days of Future Past - and had an HD market share of 54% - and sold 15% as many total units as that time-traveling thriller.
