Blu-ray Sales, October 6-12: Edge of Tomorrow Fights to Number One

For the week that ended on October 12th, Warner Home Entertainment's Edge of Tomorrow took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. Director Doug Liman's sci-fi actioner has already become a cause célèbre among blockbuster fans; despite receiving almost universal critical acclaim (it has a Metacritic score of 71%), the film struggled at the domestic box-office, barely grossing $100 million on top of its estimated $178-million budget. However, its number-one debut on Blu-ray certainly augurs well for the film's having a nice second life on home media. Last week, Edge of Tomorrow had a strong Blu-ray market share of 62%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Paramount Home Entertainment's Transformers: Age of Extinction. The fourth film in director Michael Bay's Transformers franchise proved a massive hit with audiences this past summer. The film grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of its projected $210 million budget, and these earnings came on the heels of less-than-enthusiastic critical notices; on Metacritic, Age of Extinction mustered a 32% approval rating. On the Blu-ray-only list, Age of Extinction sold 73% as many copies as Edge of Tomorrow and had an HD market share of 53%. On the overall package-media list, the film sold 84% as many total units as the Tom Cruise-starring actioner.

Finally, Disney's Sleeping Beauty rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. Despite the film's current reputation as a widescreen classic, it also has the notoriety as a picture that could have broke Disney; its production costs were so great that even its relative box-office success in 1959 wasn't enough to get the studio out of the red. On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Sleeping Beauty sold 72% as many Blu-rays as Edge of Tomorrow (and garnered a great HD market share of 72%). On the overall package-media chart, Sleeping Beauty moved 62% as many units as Edge of Tomorrow.
