For the week that ended on August 24th, Sony Home Entertainment's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. This sequel to the hit 2011 comic-book actioner struggled somewhat to connect with critics and fans. Although its worldwide gross was over $708 million, it made just under $203 million domestically, with some analysts speculating that the domestic total did not cover the film's production budget. Additionally, critics had less than favorable notices for the film; on Metacritic, it currently has a 53% rating. Last week, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had a robust Blu-ray market share of 67%.

Next up on the overall package-media and Blu-ray-only lists was Summit and Lionsgate's Divergent. The film adaptation of author Veronica Roth's bestselling YA novel, Divergent performed solidly in theaters this year, though it lacked the kind of widespread support that the Hunger Games and Twilight franchises found; despite earning over $274 million worldwide (on top of an estimated $85 million production budget), Divergent did not greatly impress critics, garnering a 48% score on Metacritic. Divergent sold 9% as many Blu-rays as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and had an HD market share of 40%, and on the overall package-media chart, it sold 15% as many units as the webslinging adventure.

Finally, Sony scored yet again with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Blu-ray; third place went to a Wal-Mart exclusive double-feature of The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This two-pack sold 8% as many Blu-rays as the The Amazing Spider-Man 2-only edition and had an HD market share of 100%. On the overall package-media chart, this special edition came in twelfth place (it sold 5% as many total units as The Amazing Spider-Man 2), with third place going to Pure Flix's faith-based drama God's Not Dead. While the critical reception to God's Not Dead was not enthusiastic (its Metacritic score is 16%), the public response was far more positive - the $2-million feature grossed over $60 million domestically. Regarding the overall package-media chart, the Kevin Sorbo-starring drama sold 26% as many total units and 5% as many Blu-rays as The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
