For the week that ended on July 20th, Twentieth Century Fox's Rio 2 debuted at the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. This sequel to the 2011 animated hit overcame mediocre critical notices - it currently has a Metacritic score of 49% - to find commercial success at the global box office; the film grossed just under $490 million worldwide on top of its $103-million budget. This week, Rio 2 had a 45% HD market share. Further adding to Rio 2's home-media performance was Wal-Mart's exclusive Rio / Rio 2 DVD package, which showed up at number three on the overall package-media list and sold 10% as many total units as Rio 2 did by itself.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists was Warner's The LEGO Movie, which moved down a spot from its number-one position last week. Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord's animated comedy has proved itself as one of 2014's breakout smashes; critics praised the film, as its solid 82% Metacritic score indicates, and it has grossed over $467 million worldwide, a figure that's more impressive when one takes into consideration its estimated $60 million budget. This week, The LEGO Movie had a 34% HD market share and sold 12% as many Blu-rays as Rio 2 and 16% as many total units.

Finally, another Warner title, 300: Rise of an Empire, rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales charts. This sequel to director Zach Snyder's 2007 hit was a modest disappointment for the studio; besides receiving mediocre critical notices (the film has a 48% Metacritic score), Rise of an Empire went on to gross only $106 million domestically, a figure below its estimated $110-million production budget (that said, the picture performed much stronger overseas, earning an additional $224 million). 300: Rise of an Empire sold 6% as many Blu-rays as Rio 2 and had an HD market share of 41%. On the overall package-media chart, it came in fifth place and sold 7% as many total units as Rio 2.
