For the week that ended on July 13th, Warner's
The LEGO Movie continued to hold the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord's animated comedy has proved itself as one of 2014's breakout smashes. Critics praised the film, as its solid
82% Metacritic score indicates, and it has grossed
over $467 million worldwide, a figure that's even more impressive when one takes into consideration its estimated $60 million budget. This week,
The LEGO Movie had a 32% HD market share.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists was another Warner title,
300: Rise of an Empire. This sequel to
director Zach Snyder's 2007 hit was a modest disappointment for the studio. Besides receiving mediocre critical notices (the film has a
48% Metacritic score),
Rise of an Empire went on to gross only
$106 million domestically, a figure below its estimated $110-million production budget (that said, the picture performed much stronger overseas, earning an additional $224 million).
300: Rise of an Empire sold 65% as many Blu-rays as
The LEGO Movie and had an HD market share of 41%, and on the overall package-media chart, it sold 51% as many total units as
The LEGO Movie.
Finally, Sony's
The Raid 2 rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales charts. An ultraviolent crime epic - the sequel to the 2011 cult hit
The Raid: Redemption -
The Raid 2 struggled to find mainstream success last March, though its critical response suggests that like its predecessor, the film will be a niche favorite; accompanying its
$2.6 million domestic gross is a decent
71% Metacritic average.
The Raid 2 had a high Blu-ray market share of 69% and sold 36% as many Blu-rays as
The LEGO Movie. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in seventh place - Disney's
Frozen again took the third-place spot - and sold 17% as many units as
The LEGO Movie.
