For the week that ended on July 6th, Warner's
The LEGO Movie reclaimed the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media rankings. Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord's animated comedy has proved itself as one of 2014's breakout smashes. Critics praised the film (as its solid
82% Metacritic score indicates), which has grossed
over $467 million worldwide, a figure that becomes more impressive when one takes into consideration its estimated $60 million budget. This week,
The LEGO Movie had a 34% HD market share.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists was another Warner title,
300: Rise of an Empire. This sequel to the 2007 hit
300 was a modest disappointment for the studio this past year. Besides getting mediocre critical notices (the film scored a
48% Metacritic ranking),
Rise of an Empire went on to gross only
$106 million domestically, a figure below its estimated $110-million production budget. That said, the picture performed much stronger overseas, earning an additional $224 million.
300: Rise of an Empire sold 87% as many Blu-rays as
The LEGO Movie and had an HD market share of 51%, and on the overall package-media chart, it sold 70% as many total units as
The LEGO Movie.
Finally, Universal's
Lone Survivor rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales charts. Though the Peter Berg-directed war drama courted controversy when it opened this past winter, with many in the critical community accusing the picture of jingoism (a condition that may have resulted in its
60% Metacritic score),
Lone Survivor was a hit with audiences. The $40-million picture made
over $149 million in worldwide grosses.
Lone Survivor had a Blu-ray market share of 42% and sold 28% as many Blu-rays as
The LEGO Movie. Regarding the overall package-media list, the film came in fourth place - Disney's
Frozen took the third-place spot - and sold 22% as many units as
The LEGO Movie.
