For the week that ended on June 22nd, Warner's
The LEGO Movie took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales charts. This animated comedy has proved itself as one of 2014's breakout smashes; critics mostly praised the film (as its solid
82% Metacritic score indicates), which went on to gross
over $467 million worldwide, a figure which becomes more impressive when one takes into consideration that the picture cost an estimated $60 million. For its first week of home media sales,
The LEGO Movie had a Blu-ray market share of 49%.
The LEGO Movie dominated the sales rankings; no other title came close. Even
Lone Survivor, the film that occupied last week's number-two spot from a strong position on both sales charts, couldn't approach it - the Peter Berg-directed war drama sold 7% as many Blu-rays as
The LEGO Movie and 8% as many total units. Despite generating much controversy among critics - many in the critical community accused the film of jingoism, a condition that may have resulted in its
60% Metacritic score -
Lone Survivor was a hit with audiences. The modestly budgeted picture (it cost an estimated $40 million) made
over $149 million in worldwide grosses. This week,
Lone Survivor had a Blu-ray market share of 46%.
Finally, Fox's
The Grand Budapest Hotel rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. So far, Wes Anderson's star-studded, witty comedy about the misadventures of an erudite hotel concierge (Ralph Fiennes) and his faithful lobby boy (Tony Revolori) has become the director's most successful venture. In terms of critical attentions, the film has received positive notices (to the tune of an
88% Metacritic score), and audiences have responded in kind: with a
worldwide gross of over $164 million,
The Grand Budapest Hotel is now Anderson's highest grossing feature. On the Blu-ray-only list,
The Grand Budapest Hotel sold 6% as many copies as
The LEGO Movie and had an HD market share of 52%. Regarding the overall package-media list,
The Grand Budapest Hotel came in fourth place (behind the Liam Neeson actioner
Non-Stop), where it sold 5% as many total units as
The LEGO Movie.
