Blu-ray Sales, May 26-June 1: Avatar and Frozen Jockey for Number One

For the week that ended on June 1st, 20th Century Fox's Avatar took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only chart. One of the most successful films of all time - to date, the Academy Award-winning sci-fi epic has grossed over $2.7 billion worldwide - Avatar can credit its resurgence on the home-media sales rankings to Wal-Mart's "Value of the Day" deal that marked down the price of the film by 75%. Of the total Avatar units sold, 57% came from Blu-ray retail alone.

However, just behind Avatar on the Blu-ray-only chart was Disney's Frozen, which pulled off its own sales resurgence after spending last week behind then-new releases like The Monuments Men, 3 Days to Kill, and Pompeii; Frozen sold 96% as many Blu-rays as Avatar. The story of Frozen's success has already been well documented - this year's Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Feature, Frozen won Disney much acclaim last year, with solid critical notices (a 74% score on Metacritic), complementing a worldwide gross of over $1 billion on top of its estimated $150 million production budget. On the overall package-media list, Frozen, which had a Blu-ray market share of 31%, retook the number one spot, with The Monuments Men and Avatar below it.

Finally, Sony and Twentieth Century Fox's The Monuments Men rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales list. After its distributors pulled the film from the 2013 Oscar consideration season, director George Clooney's WWII drama became a modest success following its February premiere; despite mediocre critical notices (its Metacritic score is 52%), the estimated $70-million feature grossed over $154 million worldwide. On the Blu-ray-only list, The Monuments Men sold 85% as many copies as Avatar and had an HD market share of 38%. Regarding the overall package-media list, The Monuments Men came in second place and sold 74% as many total units as Frozen.
