Blu-ray Sales, May 5-11: No Stopping Frozen

For the week that ended on May 11th, Disney Home Entertainment's Frozen took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts for the seventh time. This year's Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Feature won Disney much acclaim last year; besides solid critical notices (on Metacritic, the film has a 74% score), Frozen grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $150 million production budget. Furthermore, it's has continued to dominate the small screen - the title sold 3.2 million discs in its first day of home-media release, and this week marks the eighth week that it's stood in the top three sales positions (it's been at number one for seven of those). Frozen had a Blu-ray market share of 33%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Warner and DC Animated's Son of Batman. The straight-to-home-media adventure is an adaptation of Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert's Batman and Son, which finds the Caped Crusader (voiced by Terra Nova and Life on Mars' Jason O'Mara) learning of the child he conceived with on-again, off-again lover/nemesis Talia al Ghul (Homeland and Firefly star Morena Baccarin). Son of Batman, which had a Blu-ray market share of 64%, sold 93% as many Blu-rays as Frozen and 48% as many total units.

Finally, Warner and New Line's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only list. Like its predecessor, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug was a major box-office success. Despite average critical notices - the film has a Metacritic score of 66% - The Desolation of Smaug grossed over $952 million worldwide. On the Blu-ray-only list, it sold 57% as many discs as Frozen and had a Blu-ray market share of 46%. On the overall package media list, the film actually came in fifth place and sold 41% as many units as Frozen; the number-three position here went to the Kickstarter-funded Veronica Mars movie, which sold 42% as many total units as the Disney hit.
