Blu-ray Sales, April 28-May 4: Frozen Stays at Number One

For the week that ended on May 4th, Disney Home Entertainment's Frozen again took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This year's Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Feature won Disney much acclaim last year; besides solid critical notices (on Metacritic, the film has a 74% score), Frozen grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $150 million production budget. Furthermore, it's has continued to dominate the small screen - the title sold 3.2 million discs in its first day of home-media release, and this week marks the sixth week (out of the seven it has been available on home media) that it has taken the number-one spot. Frozen had a Blu-ray market share of 32%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Lionsgate's release of The Legend of Hercules. Director Renny Harlin's reimagining of the Hercules myth was an under-performer when it premiered in January. Critics mostly reviled the film (it has a Metacritic score of 22%) and audiences largely ignored it - the picture grossed only $61 million worldwide on top of its $70 million budget. The Legend of Hercules, which had a Blu-ray market share of 32%, sold 95% as many units as Frozen on both the Blu-ray and overall package-media charts.

Finally, Warner and New Line's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists. Like its predecessor, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug was a major box-office success. Despite average critical notices - the film has a Metacritic score of 66% - The Desolation of Smaug grossed over $952 million worldwide. On the Blu-ray-only list, it sold 74% as many discs as Frozen and had a Blu-ray market share of 45%. On the overall package media list, the film sold 53% as many units as Frozen.
