The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took $35.5 million at the box office on Friday from 4,324 locations. According to preliminary estimates, the film is now on track to earn between $92 million and $97 million in its opening weekend.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) opened the Tuesday before Fourth of July weekend, and earned $137 million over the six day run. It grossed $262 million domestically and $752 million internationally. In 2002, Sam Raimi's
Spider-Man opened to $114.8 million, and eventually grossed $403.7 million.
Sony Pictures has already planned two more
Spider-Man films. Marc Webb will return to direct the next film, which is set to open in theaters across the United States in June 2016.
