Blu-ray Sales, April 21-27: Frozen Again Remains Number One

For the week that ended on April 27th, Disney Home Entertainment's Frozen took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This year's Academy Award-winner for Best Animated Feature won Disney much acclaim last year; besides solid critical notices (on Metacritic, the film has a 74% score), Frozen grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $150 million production budget. Furthermore, it's already performing strong on the small screen - the title sold 3.2 million discs in its first day of home-media release, and this week marks the fifth week (out of the six it has been available on home media) that it has taken the number-one spot. Frozen had a Blu-ray market share of 36%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Warner and New Line's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Much like its predecessor, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug was a major box-office success. Despite average critical notices - the film has a Metacritic score of 66% - The Desolation of Smaug grossed over $952 million worldwide. On the Blu-ray-only list, it sold 94% as many discs as Frozen and had a Blu-ray market share of 48%. On the overall package media list, the film came in fourth place (number two went to Tyler Perry's Madea's Neighbors From Hell) and sold 72% as many units as Frozen.

Finally, Universal Home Entertainment's release of Ride Along rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. This action-comedy was a sleeper hit for the studio this past January - thanks to word-of-mouth support, the modestly budget feature (it cost an estimated $25 million to produce) grossed over $134 million domestically. Ride Along sold 63% as many Blu-rays as Frozen and had an HD market share of 31%. Regarding the overall package media list, Ride Along sold 73% as many total units as Frozen.
