Panasonic DMP-BD10 Firmware 2.0

Panasonic has released the firmware upgrade that BD10 owners have been waiting for since first receiving their players back in October. The upgrade will allow the players to now decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution audio streams. Other enhancements included enhanced EZ Sync/VIErA Link functionality and improved player performance and stability. Notably missing from the list is DTS-HD Master Audio, which is the lossless audio codec developed by DTS (and used on all Fox releases). Currently, sources indicate that the Sigma chip inside the BD10 will not support decoding of DTS-HD MA because of the increasing amount of resources necessary to decode the audio stream. Owners should not expect this codec to be supported at any time in the future on this machine. Even without DTS-HD MA, the inclusion of DTS-HD HR is a nice addition to the player's capabilities. Many Lionsgate films take advantage of this lossy codec, which supports much higher bitrates than current DTS audio streams. Dolby TrueHD support will be a welcome addition to owners of the “Beside You In Time” release, and is expected to become the main lossless audio codec as Warner and Sony have already announced titles utilizing its capabilities.
