Blu-ray Sales, April 7-13: Smaug Flies Over Frozen

For the week that ended on April 13th, Warner and New Line's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug took the top spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Much like its predecessor, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug was a major box-office success. Despite average critical notices - the film has a Metacritic score of 66% - The Desolation of Smaug grossed over $952 million worldwide. The second Hobbit picture had a Blu-ray market share of 61%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts was Disney Home Entertainment's Frozen. For three weeks, the Academy Award-winning family feature dominated home media sales after a strong showing in theaters. In addition to solid critical notices (on Metacritic, the film has a 74% score), Frozen grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $150 million production budget. Furthermore, it's already setting records on the small screen; as Blu-ray.com reported last month, the title sold 3.2 million discs in its first day of home-media release, helping to make it Disney's best-selling kids' movie of all time on Blu-ray. Frozen sold 30% as many Blu-rays as The Desolation of Smaug and had a 36% HD market share. On the overall package-media list, the film sold 51% as many units as the Peter Jackson-directed fantasy.

Finally, another Disney feature rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts: the straight-to-home media release of The Pirate Fairy. The CGI-animated entertainment, which details the continuing adventures of fan-favorite Peter Pan character Tinker Bell, sold 8% as many Blu-rays as The Desolation of Smaug and had an HD market share of 35%. Regarding the overall package media list, The Pirate Fairy sold 14% as many total units as the Hobbit feature.
