Blu-ray Sales, Mar. 17-23: Home Media Charts Get Frozen

For the week that ended on March 23rd, Disney Home Entertainment's Frozen took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. The winner of this year's Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Frozen won Disney much acclaim last year. Besides solid critical notices (on Metacritic, the film has a 74% score), Frozen grossed over $1 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $150 million production budget. Furthermore, it's already setting records on the small screen; as Blu-ray.com reported last week, the title sold 3.2 million discs in its first day of home-media release. Frozen had a Blu-ray market share of 50%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was another Disney title, the docudrama Saving Mr. Banks. This behind-the-scenes look at Mary Poppins was a modest success for the studio in 2013; it grossed over $83 million domestically on top of its estimated $35-million production budget. Still, it couldn't come close to Frozen: even at second place, Saving Mr. Banks sold only 5% as many Blu-rays as the animated hit and had a slightly lower HD market share of 42%. On the overall package media list, the film sold 6% as many total units as Frozen.

Finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's American Hustle rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. It was a canny move for the distributor - letting the film's very adult dealings stand out among the more family-friendly Frozen and Saving Mr. Banks - that continued the fortunes of this critically acclaimed, Academy Award-nominated favorite: it has a strong Metacritic score of 90% and grossed over $250 million worldwide on top of its $40 million budget. On both the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media lists, American Hustle (which had a Blu-ray market share of 49%) sold 5% as many discs as Frozen.
