Blu-ray Sales, Feb. 17-23: Game of Thrones Fights for First Place

For the week that ended on February 23rd, HBO Home Entertainment's Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season set took the top spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. This dark fantasy - an adaptation of author George R. R. Martin's acclaimed A Song of Fire and Ice series - has been a hit for the network since its premiere in 2011, and the third season saw its ratings rise to even higher levels. Given the show's return in April, its strong home media performance is not surprising. Last week, the film had an impressive Blu-ray market share of 65%.

Next up on the overall package media and Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Disney's The Jungle Book. One of the most beloved of the Disney studio classics, the film made its premiere on the HD format this month, and its top-three positioning during its first two weeks reflected the level of consumer anticipation for the title. On the Blu-ray-only list, The Jungle Book sold 23% as many discs as Game of Thrones and had a Blu-ray market share of 50%, and on the overall package media chart, the film sold 30% as many total units as the HBO series.

Finally, Summit and Lionsgate's Ender's Game rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. The long-awaited big-screen iteration of Orson Scott Card's iconic YA novel, Ender's Game struggled to make much of an impact in theaters last year. It had a modest theatrical impact, scoring okay critical ratings (it currently has a 51% Metacritic score) and barely earning back its estimated production budget of $110 million; the film grossed $112 million worldwide. On the Blu-ray-only list, Ender's Game sold 18% as many discs as Game of Thrones and had a Blu-ray market share of 43%, and on the overall package media chart, the film sold 28% as many total units as Game of Thrones.
