Blu-ray Sales, Feb. 10-16: The Jungle Book Swings into First Place

For the week that ended on February 16th, Disney's The Jungle Book rose to number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media rankings. The film, one of the most beloved of the Disney studio classics, was making its premiere on the HD format, and its top position during its debut week reflected the level of consumer anticipation for the title. Last week, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 58%.

Next up on the overall package media and Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Summit and Lionsgate's Ender's Game. The long-awaited big-screen adaptation of Orson Scott Card's iconic YA novel, Ender's Game struggled to make much of an impact in theaters last year. It had a soft theatrical landing, scoring mediocre critical ratings (it currently has a 51% Metacritic score) and barely earning back its estimated production budget of $110 million; the film grossed $112 million worldwide. On the Blu-ray-only list, Ender's Game sold 80% as many discs as The Jungle Book and had a Blu-ray market share of 52%, and on the overall package media chart, the film sold 89% as many total units as the Disney favorite.

Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's The Best Man Holiday rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. The sequel to the 1999 surprise hit The Best Man was a solid success with audiences last November - it grossed over $70 million domestically on top of its $17-million production budget. Universal's positioning of The Best Man Holiday on home media worked as a nice bit of counter-programming to the other, more family-friendly options on these sales rankings; the film sold 33% as many Blu-rays as The Jungle Book and had a 27% HD market share. On the overall package-media sales chart, this ribald comedy sold 72% as many total units as The Jungle Book.
