For the week that ended on January 12th, Universal Studios'
Despicable Me 2 again took the number one spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. This animated comedy, the sequel to
Universal's 2010 hit, netted the studio a healthy profit last summer, grossing
over $918 million worldwide, and it has continued this success on the small-screen. On the home media platforms,
Despicable Me 2 has been number one for five weeks now, and last week, it had an HD market share of 40%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was a new release: Twentieth Century Fox's
Runner Runner. A collaboration between
The Lincoln Lawyer director Brad Furman and
Rounders screenwriters David Levien & Brian Koppelman,
Runner Runner struggled to find an audience last October. Critically, it scored an anemic
Metacritic grade of 36%, and it couldn't even recoup its $30-million production budget in domestic markets; it made only
$19 million in North America, though its international earnings boosted that total to just under $63 million.
Runner Runner sold 68% as many Blu-rays as
Despicable Me 2 (its Blu-ray market share was 41%) and 67% as many total units as the Steve Carell-starring animated feature.
Finally, Fox's
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters unseated
Fast & Furious 6 to round out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only media list. So far,
Percy Jackson has enjoyed a second life on home media that counteracts the somewhat tepid theatrical response it received;
its Metacritic score was 39%, and the
$68 million it made domestically did not cover its $90-million production costs. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters sold 66% as many discs as
Despicable Me 2 and had a 41% HD market share. On the overall package media chart,
Percy Jackson came in fourth place - behind
Duck Dynasty: Season 4 and
Runner Runner - selling 65% as many total units as
Despicable Me 2.
