The Cinema Guild announced earlier today that it has acquired all U.S. distribution rights to Tsai Ming Liang's new film Stray Dogs, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2013 Venice Film Festival and official selection of both the New York and Toronto Film Festivals. The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of Cinema Guild with Eric Schnedecker of Urban Distribution International.
Stray Dogs will open theatrically in 2014, followed by non-theatrical, home video and digital releases.
A father and his two children wander the margins of modern day Taipei, from the woods and rivers of the outskirts to the rain streaked streets of the city. By day the father scrapes out a meager income as a human billboard for luxury apartments, while his young son and daughter roam the supermarkets and malls surviving off free food samples. At night the family takes shelter in an abandoned building. There is no water, light or electricity. Every evening, they fall asleep on the same mattress, tightly embracing one another. Then, one stormy night, the father decides to take his children on a sailing trip.
"Stray Dogs is a bold, audacious masterpiece that will resonate with all who see it for many years to come. We are excited to make it available to US audiences," commented Ryan Krivoshey.
Born in Malaysia in 1957, Tsai Ming Liang is one of the most prominent directors of the new cinema movement in Taiwan. His previous films include "Rebels of the Neon God" (92), "Vive l'Amour" (94), "The River" (97), "The Hole" (98), "What Time Is It There?" (01), "Goodbye, Dragon Inn" (03), "The Wayward Cloud" (05), "I Don't Want to Sleep Alone" (06) and "Face" (09).
The Cinema Guild is a distributor of independent, foreign and documentary films, whose upcoming releases include Lav Diaz' "Norte, The End of History," Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez' "Manakamana," Corneliu Porumboiu's "When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism" and Joaquim Pinto's "What Now? Remind Me." Recent releases include Dominique Benicheti's "Cousin Jules," Joao Pedro Rodrigues and Joao Rui Guerra da Mata's "The Last Time I Saw Macao" and Jem Cohen's "Museum Hours."
