For the week that ended on January 5th, Universal Studios'
Despicable Me 2 again took the number one spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. This animated comedy - the sequel to
the 2010 surprise hit - netted Universal a healthy profit last summer, grossing
over $918 million worldwide, and it has continued this success on the small-screen. On the home media platforms,
Despicable Me 2 has been number one for four weeks now, and last week, it had an HD market share of 41%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales ranking was Warner's
Man of Steel. A gritty retelling of the
Superman story, director Zach Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan's film did solid business for the studio this past summer. Though its
$291-million domestic gross only just recouped its estimated production budget of $225 million, the film's additional foreign totals of over $371 million made for a decent-sized hit; Warner has since involved Ben Affleck and his
Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio to help fashion the sequel, which will co-star Affleck as a new iteration of Batman.
Man of Steel sold 58% as many Blu-rays as
Despicable Me 2 (its Blu-ray market share was actually higher, at 54%) and 45% as many total units as the Steve Carell-starring animated feature.
Finally, another Universal title that has remained near
Despicable Me 2 during the last four weeks rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only media list:
Fast & Furious 6. Even after the death of star Paul Walker, this blockbuster actioner continued the success that the
Fast and Furious franchise has enjoyed,
earning almost $789 million worldwide on top of its $160-million budget. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Fast & Furious 6 sold 52% as many discs as
Despicable Me 2 and had a 43% HD market share. On the overall package media chart,
Fast & Furious 6 came in second place, selling 49% as many total units as
Despicable Me 2. In third place on that overall ranking was Fox's
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters; that fantasy-adventure had an HD market share of 42% and sold 45% as many total units as
Despicable Me 2.
