For the week that ended on December 15th, Universal Studios'
Despicable Me 2 took the number-one spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. This animated comedy - the sequel to
the 2010 surprise hit - netted Universal a healthy profit last summer; even after receiving average critical notices (
its Metacritic rating stands at 62%), the film grossed
over $918 million worldwide. On home media platforms,
Despicable Me 2 had an HD market share of 56%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media sales rankings was another Universal title:
Fast & Furious 6. Even with the tragedy of star Paul Walker's death hanging over the home media release, this action blockbuster continued the success that the
Fast and Furious franchise has enjoyed; in a fitting, generous move from the studio, a portion of the proceeds from the picture's small-screen run went to support Walker's Reach Out WorldWide charity.
Fast & Furious 6 grossed almost $789 million worldwide on top of its $160-million budget, far outpacing the unimpressive critical reception -
a 61% Metacritic score - it received. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Fast & Furious 6 sold 62% as many discs as
Despicable Me 2 (it also had a 55% HD market share), and on the overall package media chart,
Fast & Furious 6 sold 64% as many total units as the family-friendly favorite.
Finally, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's
The Wolverine rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media lists. The sixth film featuring
Hugh Jackman's iconic turn as Wolverine,
The Wolverine proved a modest success last summer. It scored an average
Metacritic rating of 60%, and while its
$132-million domestic haul only just covered its estimated $120-million production costs, its
international take of $282 million helped the film to turn a profit.
The Wolverine sold 9% as many Blu-rays as
Despicable Me 2 (its Blu-ray market share was 52%) and 10% as many total units as the Steve Carell-starring animated feature.
