American Film Institute Announces Best Films and TV Shows of 2013

The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced its ten best films of 2013. Amongst them are the comedy-drama Inside Llewyn Davis, the powerful period drama 12 Years a Slave, and the intense thriller Captain Phillips. The AFI also revealed its top ten television shows of the year. Amongst them are The Americans, Game of Thrones, and Veep.

Following the announcements, AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale said: "AFI Awards is a moment for the most accomplished storytellers of 2013 to pause and be appreciated – not as competitors, but as a community. Acknowledging their collective contributions to America's rich cultural legacy is both AFI's national mandate – and our honor."

The films and TV shows selected by the AFI jury will be honored on January 10 2014 in Los Angeles.
