For the week that ended on December 1st, Pixar and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Monsters University took back the number-one spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. This prequel to the 2001 animated favorite
Monsters, Inc. has remained at the top of the different media charts since its small-screen release in October, and that success comes on the heels of its strong theatrical performance last summer; despite an average
Metacritic score of 65%,
Monsters University grossed over $743 million worldwide. On home media platforms, the film had an impressive HD market share of 73%.
Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales rankings was Summit and Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
Red 2. The sequel to the 2012 surprise hit
Red, this action-comedy did not find the same commercial success as its predecessor; while it had a (relatively) modest production budget of $84 million,
Red 2 grossed only
$53 million domestically and - as its
47% Metacritic score indicated - received middling critical notices. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Red 2 sold 35% as many discs as
Monsters University (it also had a 40% HD market share), and on the overall package media chart,
Red 2 came in fourth place and sold 64% as many total units as the Pixar comedy.
Finally, another Disney venture -
Planes - rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only sales chart. Even after encountering negative reviews from the critical community (
its Metacritic score currently stands at 39%), the film turned a modest profit for the studio, grossing over
$90 million domestically (and $129 million internationally) on top of its $50 million budget. On the Blu-ray-only list,
Planes sold 34% as many discs as
Monsters University (it also had a 33% HD market share), and on the overall package media chart, the second Disney feature actually came in second place, beating out
Red 2 and selling 75% as many total units as
Monsters University.
