With years of pent up demand for next generation consoles, it was an itch that just couldn't be scratched by the Wii U. On Friday the 8th generation of consoles truly started, and boy did it start with a bang. Sony have announced that over 1,000,000 units have been sold to consumers in North America over the first 24 hours, smashing all previous records. Strong PS4 sales are expected to revive a gaming industry that is currently in decline and with over one million sold, hopefully the change has begun.
As has been noted by many industry watchers and analysts, the PS4 was expected to have a very strong debut, but none went as far as to estimate over one million sales. This strong start will also put Nintendo and Microsoft on the back foot with the Wii U still struggling to pick up at just 1.75m units shipped by Nintendo to North America since inception and the Xbox One coming in with weaker hardware at a higher price tag. We could be seeing the start of another period of global PlayStation dominance similar to the years of the PlayStation 2.
Microsoft launch the Xbox One in thirteen countries on Friday and with the figure of one million sales already out there from the competition, pressure will be very high for a repeat performance. We will keep you updated as soon as we have the figures from Microsoft.
