Blu-ray Sales, Nov. 4-10: Monsters University Remains at Number One

For the week that ended on November 10th, Pixar and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Monsters University remained at number one on both both the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. This prequel to the 2001 animated favorite Monsters, Inc. performed strongly at the box-office last summer; despite an average Metacritic score of 65%, Monsters University grossed over $743 million worldwide. On home media, the film had an HD market share of 37%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only sales rankings was Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's White House Down. The second of this year's two "Die Hard in the White House" features - the other being the R-rated Olympus Has Fallen - White House Down proved a costly flop for the studio and its director, Independence Day helmer Roland Emmerich. The film, which had an estimated production budget of $150 million, grossed only $73 million domestically and - as its 52% Metacritic score indicated - received middling critical notices. On the Blu-ray-only list, White House Down sold 95% as many discs as Monsters University (it also had a 41% HD market share), and on the overall package media chart, White House Down came in third and sold 86% as many total units as the Pixar comedy.

Finally, another Sony title - Grown Ups 2 - rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only media list. This Adam Sandler vehicle (the sequel to his hit 2010 comedy Grown Ups) netted Sony a modest profit: even after receiving terrible reviews - it currently has a Metacritic score of 19% - the $80-million movie made over $246 million worldwide. Grown Ups 2 had an HD market share of 31% and sold 74% as many Blu-rays as Monsters University. Regarding the overall package media list, the second Grown Ups stood in second place and sold 88% as many total units as Monsters University.
