Blu-ray Sales, Oct. 28-Nov. 3: Monsters University Scores Highest Marks

For the week that ended on November 3rd, Pixar and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Monsters University took the top spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. The prequel to the 2001 animated favorite Monsters, Inc., this family-friendly comedy performed strongly at the box-office last summer; despite an average Metacritic score of 65%, Monsters University grossed over $743 million worldwide. On home media, the film had an HD market share of 49%.

Monsters University dominated the media charts; nothing else came close in terms of sales figures. The week's second-place winner on the Blu-ray-only and overall home media sales rankings was Universal Studios' R.I.P.D., and it only managed to sell 15% as many Blu-rays as Monsters University and 17% as many total units. For the Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds-starring action-comedy, this loss is yet another chapter in R.I.P.D.'s troubled history. The film, which had an estimated production budget of $130 million, grossed only $78 million worldwide and - as its 25% Metacritic score indicated - received poor critical notices. Even its HD market share wasn't particularly notable: 44% of R.I.P.D. copies sold came from the Blu-ray platform.

Finally, Disney's The Little Mermaid rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only media list. The 1989 animated classic revitalized Disney's feature animation department and proved an enduring success for the studio - the film made over $211 million worldwide (almost $400 million, when adjusted for inflation) and continues to attract new fans on the home media platform. One of the fall's most anticipated HD titles, this new Little Mermaid Blu-ray had an HD market share of 100% and sold 8% as many discs as Monsters University. Regarding the overall package media list, where The Little Mermaid came in at eighth place (The Heat took the number three spot), the Disney favorite sold 4% as many total units as Monsters University.
