Kino Lorber announced today that it has acquired all U.S. rights to the latest film by writer/director Joanna Hogg (
Archipelago, Unrelated),
Exhibition, starring Viv Albertine and Liam Gilick, as well as critically acclaimed actor Tom Hiddleston (
The Avengers, The Deep Blue Sea, Thor).
After its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, Joanna Hogg's third feature film was selected to premiere in the United States at this year's New York Film Festival, where it screened together with her two previous feature films (Unrelated and Archipelago). All three of her films were screened in the festival's Emerging Artists sidebar.
This deal was negotiated between Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber and Ryan Kampe, the CEO of Visit Films.
NYFF programmers described
Exhibition as "an exactingly minimal and intimately character-driven portrait of a married middle-aged couple - both artists, named D and H - living and working in their unusual London home - at once labyrinth, battleground and refuge."
When the couple decide to sell their home (where both lived together for two decades), they begin a process of saying goodbye to their shared history under the same roof. The upheaval causes anxieties to surface, and wife and performance artist D struggles to control the personal and creative aspects of her life with H. Afterall, dreams, memories, and fears have all imprinted themselves on their home, which exists as a container for their lives.
"It's rare to encounter such a work of rigorous beauty and emotional resonance, said Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber. "At the premiere in Locarno, I kept thinking Bergman's Scenes of a Marriage crossed with Akerman's Jeanne Dielmann, but Joanna's film is stunning cinema that defines its own aesthetic. We couldn't be more thrilled to bring this to American audiences."
"Joanna has proven to be an exceptionally well respected filmmaker in the UK and we are proud to help her "break" onto the international scene - and in particular in the US," said Visit Films' Ryan Campe. "Kino Lorber is the perfect partner to bring her 3rd feature to a theatrical audience and beyond."
