Blu-ray Sales, Sept. 23-29: Iron Man 3 Overtakes Number One

For the week that ended on September 29th, Disney and Marvel Studios scored the top figures on the Blu-ray and overall package media charts with their release of Iron Man 3. Bolstered by Robert Downey Jr.'s now-iconic performance in the title role, this action-comedy franchise has dominated the box-office since the first film's premiere in 2008, and Iron Man 3 is no exception. Despite a relatively large production budget of $200 million, the third installment grossed $409 million domestically and over $1.2 billion worldwide. For its Blu-ray debut, Iron Man 3 had a strong HD market share of 63%.

Next on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media rankings was last week's winner: Paramount Home Media Entertainment's World War Z. This loose adaptation of Max Brooks' cult zombie novel proved one of the biggest surprises of the summer; after generating negative buzz from underwhelming trailers and news of many reshoots, the film found commercial success at the box-office, scoring an okay Metacritic rating of 63% but then grossing over $539 million worldwide on top of its $190-million production budget. The Brad Pitt-starring zombie epic sold 13% as many Blu-rays as Iron Man 3 and had a Blu-ray market share of 47% (a dip from its 58% Blu-ray market share last week) and sold 17% as many total units.

Finally, another Paramount title, Star Trek Into Darkness, rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media lists. The blockbuster follow-up to J.J. Abrams' summer 2009 favorite, Star Trek Into Darkness garnered solid critical and commercial notices in May - it scored a Metacritic rating of 72% and grossed over $465 million worldwide on top of its $190 million budget. In addition to maintaining its position in the top three spots on the home media markets, this sci-fi adventure sold 8% as many Blu-rays as Iron Man 3 (its Blu-ray market share actually rose from 50% to 53%) and 10% as many total units as that Marvel actioner.
