For the week that ended on September 22nd, Paramount Home Media Entertainment scored the top figures on the Blu-ray and overall package media charts for the second week in a row with its release of
World War Z. This loose adaptation of Max Brooks' cult zombie novel proved one of the biggest surprises of the summer; after generating underwhelming buzz from underwhelming trailers and news of many reshoots, the film found both critical and commercial success at the box-office, scoring a decent
Metacritic rating of 63% and grossing
over $539 million worldwide on top of its $190 million budget.
World War Z also had a strong HD market share of 58%.
Next on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media rankings was another Paramount title: the blockbuster sequel
Star Trek Into Darkness. The follow-up to J.J. Abrams'
summer 2009 favorite,
Star Trek Into Darkness weathered a fair amount of negative critical attention despite its solid box-office performance in May - it scored a
Metacritic rating of 72% and grossed
over $465 million worldwide on top of its $190 million budget. In addition to maintaining its position in the top three spots on the home media markets, this sci-fi adventure sold 23% as many Blu-rays as
World War Z (and had a Blu-ray market share of 50%) and 27% as many total units.
Finally, the double-feature package of
Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only list. A Wal-Mart exclusive, this set sold 11% as many Blu-rays as
World War Z and 6% as many total units. On the overall package media rankings, Lionsgate and Summit Home Entertainment's
Now You See Me took the third spot. A sleeper hit during last summer's movie slate,
Now You See Me had
a Metacritic rating of 50% and grossed
over $317 million worldwide off its $75 million budget. Of its total home media sales figures, the film had an HD market share of 33% and sold 8% as many units as
World War Z (it also sold 5% as many Blu-rays).
