Blu-ray Sales, Sept. 2-8: Now You See Me Transports to the Top

For the week that ended on September 8th, Lionsgate and Summit Home Entertainment's Now You See Me scored the top figures on the Blu-ray and overall package media charts. A sleeper hit of the 2013 summer movie slate, Now You See Me had a Metacritic rating of 50% and grossed over $317 million worldwide off its $75 million budget. In addition to debuting at number one on the home media markets, this star-studded escapist feature had a Blu-ray market share of 42%.

Next on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media rankings was a Warner title: The Great Gatsby. Last week's winner, director Baz Luhrmann's interpretation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic underwent a rocky post-production schedule - reshoots caused Warner Brothers to change its initial release date from Christmas 2012 to May 2013 - on the road to find box-office success; though its critical notices weren't exceptional (its Metacritic total is 55%), The Great Gatsby grossed over $331 million worldwide on top of an estimated $105 million production budget. Of its home media sales figures, the film had an HD market share of 34% and sold 28% as many Blu-rays as Now You See Me. Regarding the overall media list, Gatsby sold 33% as many total units as the magic-heist thriller.

Finally, Twentieth Century Fox's Epic remained at third place on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts for the second week in a row. This adaptation of William Joyce's The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, Epic garnered a robust theatrical run despite mediocre critical notices (the film's Metacritic total is 52%); the CGI adventure grossed over $253 million worldwide on top of a projected $100 million budget. On Blu-ray, Epic sold 23% as many discs as Now You See Me and had an HD market share of 34%. On the overall package media list, it sold 28% as many units.
