David Cronenberg's classic first film Shivers a.k.a They Came From Within (1975) will be remade by Danish director Rie Rasmussen. Jeff Sackman and Michael Baker will produce the upcoming remake. The film's original executive producer, Andre Link, will also be involved.
Casting is currently underway, and shooting of the new film is expected to begin in early 2014.
Following the announcement for the upcoming remake at the TIFF director Rasmussen said: "I'm Scandinavian and am very comfortable with sexual expression as a part of a healthy, modern-day reality, and I've always loved the underlying social messages in a well-made horror film. The opportunity to reinterpret this film from today's point of view, adding my own female intuition and life experience was a temptation I couldn't resist."
Sackman also commented: "This is an opportunity to bring Shivers to audiences in our current era and reminds me of cutting-edge films I've had the opportunity to work on previously, including American Psycho, Buffalo 66, and Young People Fucking."
The cast of Cronenberg's original film included Paul Hampton, Joe Silver, Lynn Lowry, Barbara Steele, and Allan Kolman.
