Russian Ark
A recreation of Russian history and culture and the first ever feature to be shot in a single, unedited take. Magically transported to St. Petersburg's Hermitage museum in the early 1700s, a contemporary filmmaker and a cynical 19th century French diplomat become accomplices in an extraordinary voyage through Russia's turbulent past to the present day. Starring Sergey Dreyden, Mariya Kuznetsova, and Leonid Mozgovoy. Street date: November 19th.
Barbara
Germany's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 85th Academy Awards (2013). German drama set in pre-Berlin Wall East Germany in 1980. Nina Hoss stars as Barbara, a young doctor starting a new job at a small hospital in the provinces. It transpires she has been transferred there by the government as punishment for applying for an exit visa from the GDR. Her aim is to escape to the West to join her boyfriend Jörg (Mark Waschke), who has been planning her escape via the Baltic Sea. Barbara, detached and self-contained, keeps her head down and gets on with her work, despite being subjected to random home checks and intrusive body searches. However, as the weeks go by, she becomes both beguiled and confused by the attentions of her new boss, Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld). Can she trust him, or has he been assigned to keep tabs on her? Starring Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld, and Rainer Bock/ Street date: November 12th.
Shoot the Sun Down
In this adventurous western set in 1836, four misanthropic people band together to find a golden treasure. But as they progress, members of the group, including a scalper, a gunman, an indentured female servant, and an aging sea captain begin double and triple-crossing each other in hopes of getting all the gold for themselves. This classic western in the tradition of Sergio Leone's '
Man With No Name' trilogy has been out of circulation for over 30+ years (and has not been seen in it's original aspect ratio since it's theatrical release in 1978). Director David Leeds has supervised this beautiful new high definition widescreen transfer for it's Blu-ray debut, and has added missing footage that has never been seen, finally competing the picture he originally intended to make. Starring Margot Kidder, Christopher Walken, and Bo Brundin.
