Cohen Media Group has detailed its upcoming Blu-ray release of Spanish director Pablo Berger's Blancanieves (2012), starring Maribel Verdú, Daniel Giménez Cacho, and Angela Molina. The release will arrive on the U.S. market on September 3rd.
Blancanieves was selected to represent Spain in the Foreign Language Film Category of 85th Academy Awards.
Blancanieves has been ingeniously directed by Pablo Berger (Torremolinos 73) in the timeless style of the great silent films, but with a modern, and even daring edge. A famous bullfighter, Antonio Villalta (Daniel Gimenez Cacho, Come Out and Play, Bad Education), suffers a paralyzing trauma in the ring on the very day that his wife dies while giving birth to a daughter, Carmen (played as a child by Sofia Oria). The invalid Antonio eventually marries his nurse (Maribel Verdu, Pan's Labyrinth, Y Tu Mama Tambien), a sadistic social climber who treats the sweet Carmen as a slave.
In time, the girl manages to flee her oppressive home and joins a traveling band of dwarves who perform as comedic matadors. And it turns out, once she picks up the red robe, Carmen (played as a young woman by stunning newcomer Macarena Garcia) is a naturally gifted bullfighter, just like her father. But her great success is just the thing to stir her wicked stepmother's deadly rage. Also starring Spanish cinema icon Angela Molina (That Obscure Object of Desire; The Eyes, the Mouth), Blancanieves moves beyond being an homage to silent cinema, to become a story of love and liberation for all time.
