For the week that ended on August 4th, Paramount Pictures topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall home media sales charts with its release of
G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The sequel to 2009's
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, this action blockbuster handily beat out all other package media options, thus continuing the success it had during its theatrical run last March, where it went on to
gross over $371 million worldwide on top of its $130 million production budget. Regarding its Blu-ray totals, the film had a solid HD market share of 54%.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation dominated the media charts; nothing else came close in terms of sales figures. The week's second-place winner on the Blu-ray-only and overall home media sales rankings was Warner Home Entertainment's
highly acclaimed DC Animated feature Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, and it only managed to sell 15% as many Blu-rays as
G.I. Joe: Retaliation and 13% as many total units. Still,
The Flashpoint Paradox scored a win over
Retaliation with a higher Blu-ray market share total - 60% of its sales came from the HD market - and the weeks to come will reveal if the animated adventure has the staying power, as
The Dark Knight Returns: Part One and
Part Two did, to rise in the home media charts.
Finally, Warner Bros'
42 closed out the third spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall home media lists. This was the third consecutive week that director Brian Helgeland's Jackie Robinson biopic performed strongly on small-screen package media, its sales adding to
a theatrical gross of over $95 million domestically and a
Metacritic ranking of 62%. On the the Blu-ray-only chart, the sports drama sold 6% as many copies as
G.I. Joe: Retaliation (and had a Blu-ray market share of 25%), and on the overall package media list, it sold 13% as many total units as
Retaliation.
