Blu-ray Sales, July 22-28: 42 Stays at First Place

For the week that ended on July 28th, Warner Bros again scored the top film on the Blu-ray-only and overall home media sales charts with its release of 42. This was the second consecutive week that director Brian Helgeland's Jackie Robinson biopic dominated small-screen package media, and its success here continues the good fortune that began during its theatrical run; last April, the estimated $40 million drama grossed over $95 million domestically and scored a generally positive Metacritic ranking of 62%. Only its Blu-ray totals dipped, as its HD market share dropped from 34% to 25%.

Likewise, in second place on the Blu-ray-only ranking was last week's second-place winner: the Sony title Evil Dead. This graphically violent remake of Sam Raimi's 1981 cult classic grossed over $54 million domestically on top of its projected $17 million budget and generated reasonably enthusiastic critical notices with its Metacritic score of 57%. On the the Blu-ray-only chart, Evil Dead sold 54% as many copies as 42 and had a higher Blu-ray market share of 39%. On the overall package media list, the supernatural thriller came in third place - the Disney Channel musical Teen Beach Movie took second place - and it sold 35% as many total units as the sports picture.

Finally, Universal Studios' Despicable Me returned to the top three to close out the third spot on the Blu-ray-only list. Over the last few weeks, Despicable Me has re-emerged on the home media charts thanks to viewer anticipation for its most recent sequel, which NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke recently called "the single most profitable film in the 100-year history of Universal Studios." That film has, to date, made over $666 million worldwide, while Despicable Me's package media figures helped to pad out its own already-generous worldwide box-office haul of $543 million. On the the Blu-ray-only chart, the Steve Carell-starring CGI comedy sold 39% as many copies as 42 (and had a Blu-ray market share of 30%), and on the overall package media list, where it came in fourth place, it sold 33% as many total units as 42.
