For the week that ended on July 7th, Universal Studios' family-friendly hit
Despicable Me retook the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package media rankings. Bolstered by viewer anticipation for
the recent sequel, Universal was able to generate further home media success for its 2010 animated comedy. The re-release of
Despicable Me had a Blu-ray market share of 35%, with an additional 3D market share of 4%.
Despicable Me dominated the home media charts; nothing else came close to it in terms of sales figures. However, the
Wizard of Oz prequel
Oz the Great and Powerful continued to perform strongly for the small screen, taking second place on both the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. Despite mediocre critical notices (
its Metacritic score is currently holding at 44%), director Sam Raimi's family-fantasy has found healthy earnings both on the home media market and at the box office, earning
almost $500 million worldwide on top of its $215 million budget. The picture sold 62% as many Blu-rays as
Despicable Me and had a Blu-ray market share of 37%. On the overall package media list, it moved 58% as many total units as the top title.
Finally, Warner Bros'
Jack the Giant Slayer closed out the third spot on the Blu-ray-only and total package media rankings. The fairy-tale-adventure has now enjoyed three weeks of good home media sales, and this performance helps ameliorate its disappointing theatrical run last March. There,
Jack the Giant Slayer grossed only $197 million worldwide on top of an estimated $195 million budget and mustered a
Metacritic score of 51%. Last week, director Bryan Singer's feature sold 61% as many Blu-rays as
Despicable Me and had a Blu-ray market share of 36%, and on the overall package media list, it sold 58% as many units as
Despicable Me.
